SancochoTrip

A Musical Journey into the Rich Culture of Colombia

10 years ago I took my first trip to Colombia, and I was forever changed by the rhythm and warmth of this magical country. The flow of the Colombian people, the deep groove of the music & dance, and the incredible energy of the land made me feel an ease and warmth I had never experienced before.

Since 2019, the SancochoTrip has been my way to SHARE the beauty I discovered there and to help people have a fun, authentic, accessible experience of Colombia.

With my dear friend Mauricio Romero and a cast of Colombian musicians and friends, we’ll take you on a ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME ADVENTURE!

Your Hosts

  • YOUR GRINGO HOST

Hailing from Philadelphia, America's City of Brotherly Love, Ryan Tennis' music is all about dismantling boundaries and bringing people together. Genre-defiant by nature and with diversity at its core, his rousing songs are infused with the rhythms from the many countries he’s visited during his extensive tours. While his performances are dynamic and danceable, Tennis’ voice and songs have a disarming sweetness that lowers your defenses and lets you breathe easy.

He has toured Colombia countless times, led 3 Sancochotrips since 2019, and beginning in 2024 will be residing full time in La Sierra Nevada region of Colombia.

  • YOUR COLOMBIAN HOST

Mauricio is the founder of Huerta Rebelde, a permaculture and urban gardening organization based in Bogota. His work teaching horticulture classes and workshops has taken him all around Colombia to both urban and rural centers.

Aside from his work as an educator and farmer, Mauricio is a photographer, videographer, and lifelong music appreciator. I (Ryan) got to know him when he was serving as tour manager for El Caribefunk in Argentina, and he quickly became one of my closest friends in Colombia. His english is great, he knows an unbelievable amount about the culture of his country, and he's an incredibly genuine, humble, good-hearted person. 2024 will mark his 4th and 5th time co-leading the SancochoTrip.

  • SPECIAL MUSICAL GUEST

Youba is a master Kora player from the country of Senegal. He is of the Griot lineage of musicians and storytellers in West Africa and is a 72nd generation Kora player.

His music has a subtle balance of sweet calm and rhythmic power that reflects a lifetime spent with the Kora in his hands and a deep belief in the power of music to uplift and heal. He has a warm, playful, charming presence, and takes takes any moment he can to share his music. He and Ryan are roommates in Philadelphia, and will perform together during this trip.

He will accompany the group on both trips in 2024
